Own your 1:1s

Your 1:1 is time to get the decisions and support you need from your manager. Initiate a recurring meeting, agree on its frequency and duration, and send the invitation.

Keep shared notes. Before each meeting, review previous commitments and put your most pressing question first, with the information your manager needs to answer.

Bring an example of your work to discuss. Ask your manager to decide between conflicting priorities or arrange help you cannot obtain yourself. Leave time for what they need to discuss.

Record decisions, next steps, owners, and dates during the meeting. Follow up on your commitments and the help your manager promised.

If the meeting is canceled, propose another time. Send urgent questions through your agreed communication channel.

Where this gets tested Your 1:1 meetings keep being canceled Send the decision you need, supporting information, and the deadline; propose another meeting time. The manager must arrange support and resolve recurring scheduling conflicts, including workload or team size when access is insufficient. Read the scenario
