Your delegated work is not meeting your standard

Example situation

A team member sends the first draft of a customer proposal for tomorrow’s review. Its layout differs from yours; its pricing explanation is incomplete.

Our recommendation

Compare the draft with agreed requirements. Accept methods that meet them, coach the specific correction needed, and review the next attempt. If the deadline requires you to complete the work, explain why and arrange another supported opportunity to practice.

Manager

If you are the manager

Accept a different layout that meets the requirements. Show which pricing information is missing and why the customer needs it.

Ask them to explain their approach. If you did not state the pricing requirement, acknowledge that and clarify it. If they need the skill, demonstrate a comparable example, then ask them to revise the relevant section. Keep the assignment with them during coaching when time allows.

Review the revision against the requirement: “You separated the recurring fee from the setup fee. The customer can now see what they will pay.” Accept a revision that meets the standard.

If you must complete the section yourself, explain the deadline decision and show the change afterward. On the next proposal, assign a section with review before the full draft to allow time for practice.

If you are the team member

“Is the order of the sections required, or is the concern that the pricing is unclear?” Explain your reasoning and request an example where the standard is uncertain.

Agree on your revision and when it will be reviewed. If your manager completes it for the deadline, review the change together. Identify a comparable part you can complete next time.
