How to Negotiate and Close Deals

Last Updated:

Prepare the boundaries and value case before the first pricing discussion. During each exchange, check the plan, record the give and return, and end with a specific commitment question.

Developing

Start here. Build the foundation.
  1. 1

Before pricing talks, document opening number, target, walkaway threshold, likely requests, tradeable concessions, and required returns. Review the dated plan with the designated approver so authority limits are resolved before the buyer asks.

  2. 2

When preparing the price, quantify the buyer's revenue gain, avoided cost, or time saved using sourced buyer numbers. Present the fee in that context in the discussion and follow-up; do not substitute an unsupported value claim.

Proficient

Build consistency and rhythm.
  1. 3

When a concession is requested, pause and check the approved plan. State the give and required return together and record both before the next round; the exchange should have defensible value for both parties.

  2. 4

At the end of each late-stage conversation, name the specific commitment needed next and ask directly. Record yes, no, or the stated blocker with the next owner and date; a blocker is work to resolve, not agreement.

Mastered

Operate at the highest level.
  1. 5

Within two weeks after contract, publish the situation, objections, exchange, result, and next-time adjustment. Add conditions where the move could fail, then confirm and record a teammate's use in a comparable negotiation.

Common Pitfalls

Avoid the common failure modes.
  • Discounting before the buyer asks. Return to the approved opening and quantified outcome.
  • Giving a concession with no recorded return. State the commitment required before continuing.
  • Discussing price without the buyer's outcome. Reopen the supporting value case and its sources.
  • Proposing an exchange that benefits only the seller. Revise it until both parties can explain the value they receive.
  • Ending with a vague next step. Ask for one specific commitment with an owner and date.
